This Visa

What Is the Elective Residency Visa?

The Elective Residency Visa (ERV) is a long-stay visa for non-EU citizens who want to move to Italy full-time without working.

If you’re planning to retire in Italy and have steady passive income from a pension, annuity, or investments, this is likely the right visa for you.

Where Do You Apply?

You must apply for the ERV at the Italian Consulate in your home country, based on where you legally reside. You cannot apply from within Italy.

What Are the Requirements?

While each consulate has its own process, the core requirements include:

  • Private health insurance with at least €30,000 coverage per person, including repatriation
  • Proof of accommodation in Italy (rental or owned property)
  • Minimum passive income of €32,000/year (net)

Other documents may be required depending on your consulate.

Is the ERV Hard to Get?

Yes — the ERV is one of the most difficult visas to obtain. Applications are carefully reviewed, and approvals are limited.

The #1 Reason for Denial

The top reason people get denied is insufficient financial documentation.

Even if you meet the €32,000 income threshold, your application must include well-organized proof of income, assets, and supporting documents that clearly demonstrate long-term financial stability.

Frequently Asked Questions

Don't see your question? Get in touch through our contact page or send us an email! We'd love to help.

01

How can I work with Samantha?

02

How long does it take to apply for the ERV?

This depends on how ready you are to apply. If you have access to all of the documents your application can take up to 90 days once submitted.

03

When should I schedule my application review to stay on track for my visa?

It is best to submit the request for a review at least 6 months before you are hoping to apply for the Visa. This is to allow you time to fix any discrepancies, and also find an available opening.

04

Do you guarantee that I will get the ERV?

We guarantee that your Elective Residency Visa application will be prepared, organized, and presented in the strongest possible way — maximizing your chances of success.

While we cannot influence the Consulate’s final decision or the specifics of your personal case, we can ensure your application meets the highest standards.

We know how to address weak spots, explain discrepancies, craft persuasive cover letters, and professionally package your documents to give you the best possible presentation.
